Advances in Treating DVT

Treatment for DVT typically begins with the administration of anticoagulants and thrombolytic agents. However, excessive bleeding is a common complication. In addition, medications alone seldom eliminate the thrombus, thus leaving patients at risk for developing more DVTs.

The FDA has granted clearance for the use of AngioJet® mechanical thrombectomy for clearing venous thrombus associated with DVT. The AngioJet system quickly removes the thrombus, restores blood flow, and relieves symptoms. With this technology, a thin, flexible catheter is inserted into the thrombus. High-speed water jets create a vacuum to pull the thrombus into the catheter where the jets break it into tiny fragments. The fragments are propelled back through the catheter and evacuated from the body.

Successfully used to treat hundreds of thousands of patients suffering from thrombus in coronary arteries and peripheral veins and arteries, AngioJet mechanical thrombectomy has been reported to be effective in the rapid and effective removal of venous thrombus, thereby potentially minimizing the incidence of PE and PTS. 9-12
